Things to do in Ireland holidays

There are great things to do in Ireland. From exploring the majestic cities, museums and galleries to enjoying nights at the pubs. Small, still the entire country bewitch the visitors with its unspoilt charm and beauty. Whether it is partying or unearthing nature or relishing the human made feet Ireland is just amazing.

Day 1. Dublin – Belfast

Arrival to Dublin and travel north to Belfast. We suggest you start your Game of Thrones Tour of Northern Ireland right here, in the capital of Northern Ireland. There is so much to see in Belfast – you will definitely not get bored. We admit, most of the sights here are not GoT related – but really, who would want to miss the Titanic Museum or a Black Taxi Tour of Belfast City?! Overnight in Co. Antrim.

Day 2. County Down

On your second day it is time to head southwards and explore County Down. There are quite a few locations where GoT was shot and we completely understand why: County Down and the Mourne Mountains are just stunning! Make sure to visit the following locations: Tollymore Forest Park, Inch Abbey and Castle Ward, near Strangford.
At the end of this exciting day, we’d suggest you return to Co. Antrim and spend a second night at your hotel there.

Day 3. Antrim Coast

So it is time to leave Belfast today and make your way to the Antrim Coast. On the way you should not only enjoy the beautiful landscape of the Glens of Antrim but also the following film locations: Shane’s Castle, near Randalstown, Shillanavogy Valley, Glens of Antrim and Cairncastle. Overnight in North Co. Antrim.

Day 4. Antrim to Derry

This is going to be a long and eventful day. You will be exploring the amazing and breathtaking Causeway Coast. No wonder that so many of the Game of Thrones scenes were filmed here. Cushendun Caves: The Red Priestess gave birth to the Shadow Baby in these caves. Murlough Bay: One of the most beautiful bays on the Antrim Coast. Theon Greyjoy and Yara were riding here on their way to Pyke. Ballycastle: a lovely little village. Parts of it were used as backdrop for the Free Cities where Varys was born. Dark Hedges, near Armoy: Definitely make the 30 minute detour to Armoy where the Dark Hedges are located. These were popular even before GoT was filmed here. They can be seen in Arya’s escape from King’s Landing. Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge: Another famous attraction on the Causeway Coast. Will you dare to cross the bridge? Carrick-a-Rede was also used as the background for Storm’s End (seat of House Baratheon). Ballintoy Harbour: This cute little harbour can be seen in GoT as Lordsport Harbour on the Pyke & Iron Islands. Giant’s Causeway: The most popular and absolute must-see attraction on the Causeway Coast! Nope, it wasn’t in GoT (yet?) – but make sure to visit anyhow! Mussenden Temple & Downhill Strand: Remember the scene in Game of Thrones when the 7 idols of Westeros were burned? This was filmed on Downhill Strand and looking up from the beach, the Mussenden Temple can be seen, too. Overnight in Co. Derry.

Day 5. Derry City

Waking up in historic Derry City, today you will explore this historic city, the second largest city in Northern Ireland. It is known as being a center for culture and creativity and there are countless festivals held in the this vibrant city throughout the year, so you may lucky enough to catch one on your visit! Take a walking tour or city bus tour and learn all about the importance of this city and how it has emerged from the shadows of the past. And a walk around the famous Walls of Derry are a must! There are lots of museums and cultural centers for you to visit from the beautiful Guildhall to St. Columba’s Cathedral to the Tower Museum….not to mention the countless bars, restaurants and shops. This wonderful city has something for everyone, so enjoy your time in this vivacious and fun city! Overnight in Derry.

Day 6. Derry to Dublin

This is your final day in Northern Ireland. You have enjoyed both the highlights of this stunning region and seen some of the main places where filming for Games of Thrones took place. So next time you tune in and watch the show, be sure and pick out those scenes filmed in Northern Ireland. Driving back to Dublin, stop in the famous Boyne Valley, one of Irelands most ancient regions, where the world-famous pre-Christian sites of Newgrange and Knowth are located, which belong to the UNESCO world heritage today. Both tombs date back to more than 4000BC, what makes them older than the pyramids of Gizeh or Stonehenge. Overnight in the Dublin area.

Day 7. Dublin

Today you have time to explore the highlights of the Irish capital, visit the famous Trinity College and the Book of Kells and discover some of Dublins Viking history on a visit to Dublinia in the Liberties. Board the fabulous Viking Splash tour, a city tour guided by Vikings and the unique rolling and swimming vehicle takes you to all the highlights in the Dublin city centre. Enjoy one last pint of Guinness in the Gravity Bar of the Guinness Storehouse, which gives you a fantastic view over the roofs of Dublin, the Dublin Bay and the Dublin mountains.
