Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra is one of the holiest and sacred pilgrimage sites to the Hindus. Nestled at a height of 5,300 feet, the total distance from Katra town to Mata Vaishno shrine is 16km. Annually millions of devotees voluntary take the strenuous ascending walk to the shrine. It is an arduous walk and requires high-class stamina and amazing fitness level. It is the pure and pious devotion filled heart of the devotees that gives them the energy, which helps them to complete the yatra. With the constant chanting of “Jai Mata Di” invigorate the devotees with more energy and indomitable spirit.
Located high up in the hills the sacred pilgrimage is open throughout the year. The steep and meandering climb makes the walk even more difficult. But over the time the facilities has enhanced along the route making the journey more comfortable. Elderly, children and sick people could take the pony rides to complete the climb. Helicopter service is also available for Jammu and Katra to Sanjichat. It is the highest point in the Vaishno Devi route. Furthermore, pure vegetarian food stalls and small shops are available throughout the route for pilgrims. Two routes are available to the pilgrims from Katra to undertake the strenuous ascending walk to the Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan. The new one is easy but does not pass through the Ardh Kuwari, and Bhairav Ghati. The old one passes through the Ardh Kuwari and goes through the Bhairav Ghati.
A sacred travel to the Mata Vaishno Devi, it is advised to first complete the pilgrimage. The pilgrimage tour in itself offers thrilling hiking experience. After seeking the blessings from the Mata, and descending to the Katra, pilgrims have the option to explore the town. Jammu and Patnitop are in proximity and tourists have the option could enjoy and explore them.
